The ALGANT group of CICMA is based in Montreal, a bilingual city with a vibrant cultural and university life. CICMA is part of an active city-wide number theory network which organises, among other scientific activities, the world-famous Quebec-Vermont Number Theory Seminar, which was founded in 1983 and is the longest continuously running seminar of its kind in North America. This seminar brings together all the members of the Montreal number theory community, as well as members of Université Laval and the University of Vermont. It also enjoys the active participation of some of the leading figures who come to Montreal on a regular basis and give short courses suitable for graduate students. Students enrolled in the ALGANT program can conduct research under the supervision of any of its faculty members based in one of the partner universities, which include Concordia University, McGill University, Université de Montréal, and Université du Quebec in Montréal, as well as Université Laval in Quebec City.
The number theory group teaches fundamental courses in number theory on a regular basis. The current-year list of courses can be found on the ISM website, where can also be found the courses in other themes such as topology, differential geometry, or group theory.
Topics range over a broad part of the subject, and include a core of algebraic number theory, analytic number theory, elliptic curves, modular forms, automorphic representations, Riemann surface, theta functions, algebraic geometry, class field theory, and so on. In addition, more specialised courses may be offered tailored to the individual interests of students. Some topics covered in the past have included courses on Hilbert modular forms and varieties, p-adic and mod p modular forms, the theory of complex multiplication, p-adic Galois representations and p-adic Hodge theory, modularity lifting theorems, Euler systems and the Birch-Swinnerton Dyer conjecture, quantum cryptography, etc.
Information about how to apply can be found here. Students will be enrolled at Concordia University and are required to have passed one these English proficiency tests with the required score before starting the year in Montreal. Students will receive financial support in the order of $17,000 per year, spread over three terms, generally comprised of research support from supervisors, faculty scholarships, teaching assistantship, and/or international tuition fee reduction. After paying tuition and insurance, a student is usually left with $12.000 per year for living expenses.
Concordia has a portal helping students finding housing, but alternatives like kijiji or Craiglist work very well. Just don't forget, never pay a deposit before visiting the apartment!
